Winning team(from left ):Huang Da-Zhe, Associate Professor Yang Zhao-Wang and Xu Zhi-Hao NCYU Students Win Top Excellence Award at Poster Paper Competition

Under guidance of Associate Professor Yang Zhao-Wang, Department of Biomechatronic Engineering, National Chiayi University, Huang Da-Zhe and Xu Zhi-Hao, senior students of the department, obtained the top excellence award at the poster paper competition in “Biomechatronic and Agricultural Machinery Symposium 2017” with their “Development of the Portable Cross-Platform Hypnosis Physiological Information Detection System.”

Associate Professor Yang stressed that the existing hypnosis physiological information detection systems are not only high-priced but far from portable. In this project, they developed a hypnosis physiological detection system that boasts user-friendliness, portability, and low costs. Accessibility is what distinguishes it from other hypnosis physiological detection devices available on the market.

Hardware-wise, the newly developed system adopts the commonly seen Arduino development board, complete with the foreign open-source detection hardware. In terms of software, two graphic user interfaces have been designed, with the Arduino as the foundation, to make the hypnosis physiological detection device compatible with different platforms (Windows and Android). The system can be utilized to measure the hypnotized person’s hypnotic parameters, including palm temperature, heartbeat and galvanic skin response (GSR).

In the interview, Huang said excitedly that the top award came as a surprise since he had only considered the project an experience to learn instead of a chance to win a prize. During the contest, they needed to introduce their work within three minutes, which felt like three long years that never end. They had been fortunate that, despite the numerous questions posed by the three professors on the judging committee, they did not make any mistake nor stammer in both the introduction and Q&A.

Huang Da-Zhe expressed his gratitude to their advisor Associate Professor Yang for trusting the big project in their hands, who are still undergraduate project students. They learned a lot in the course of development from Associate Professor Yang, who offered timely support and guided them through problems by inspiring them to think. He also suggested them to apply for “dream pursuing project” at Enterprise Incubation Center, NCYU, which provides sponsorship for their research project. Huang was also thankful to his research partner Xu for proposing different ideas during their research, which had made their experiments and software development more successful and time-efficient.

Huang indicated that, over the course of development, they used a Windows application called Visual Basic, which, luckily, had been taught during a class in their second year and thus come in handy. They also needed to learn some programming tips themselves to develop the system. They were grateful to the school for its prospective curriculum planning and outstanding hardware facilities, which have helped cultivate their program writing competency.
