A group photo of NCYU President Chyung Ay, host of the retrospective exhibition of agricultural technical missions, and the guests of honor Pride of NCYU: Agricultural Technical Missions Contribute to International Diplomacy with Agricultural Technology
This year marks the centennial anniversary of NCYU. Since founded as Kagi Agricultural and Forestry School, or Kano, in Chiayi City Shanzihding in 1919, the university has been cultivating innumerable outstanding professionals who contribute enormously to the society in Taiwan. Since 1960, a great number of alumni have been offering service in terms of agricultural technology in as far as Central and South America, Africa, Southeast Asia, etc. They are widely known as the “agricultural technical missions.” To make their valuable experiences known to the public, NCYU held “Retrospective Exhibition of Agricultural Technical Missions: Splendor Revivified and New Book Launch” jointly with the Southwestern Taiwan Office, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on the first floor of Library and Information Building, Lantan campus, on Oct. 31st. The event allowed all the participants and alumni to behold the legendary foreign assistance service provided by Taiwan in terms of agricultural technology.

To commemorate the hardships endured by the predecessors throughout the hundred years, Li Ming Jen, Dean of the College of Humanities and Arts, was commissioned to lead a team to conduct interviews and compile Oral History of NCYU – Stories of Kano Alumni Stationed Overseas within three years. The book feature interviews with 22 alumni, among whom 20 had been members of the agricultural technical missions stationed in countries around Southeast Asia, Africa, South America, and Oceania, among others. All the interviewed alumni had been stationed overseas where they provided agricultural technical support and contributed their part to the agricultural development of the foreign countries. Among the alumni, Lee Ching-Shui and Huang Rong-Jie had been serving in the missions for nearly 20 years, and Shi Mi-Nan, Liu Xian-Zong and Lai Xin-Xiong, for as long as over 30 years. Today, the organizers were proud to invite Zhang Liang-Jue, Shi Mi-Nan, Lee Ching-Shui, Chen Qing-Yi, 88-year-old Cai Yi-Fei and other alumni back to the alma mater to share their stories. Their stories told how the Kano alumni demonstrated the spirit of “soldiering on despite hardships and difficulties,” and passed on the remarkable agricultural technology of Taiwan and the Kano spirit to all corners of the world. Last year (2018), the Foundation for the Support of United Nations and World Harmony Foundation and other foundations presented the Outstanding Agricultural Contribution Award to NCYU in recognition of its commitment to cultivating countless distinguished members of the agricultural technical missions over the past sixty years.

NCYU President Chyung Ay expressed gratitude to the alumni who had been sacrificing their youth in overseas countries to contribute to Taiwan’s diplomatic relations with other countries. Not only their stories were documented in the book, but the Kano alumni were specially invited to go back to their alma mater and share their memories about the magnificent past. The objective was to introduce and urge the juniors to pass on the Kano spirit the predecessors showcased by altruistically contributing to international diplomacy in strange lands.

According to Fu Zheng-Gang, Director of the Southwestern Taiwan Office, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the history of our foreign assistance service stretches back far. Our first agricultural technical mission, who went to Vietnam, can be traced back to as early as 1959. Next year, the “Vanguard Project” targeting the needs of African countries was given birth and had helped laid the foundation for friendly terms with African countries. Afterwards, under invitation from countries in the Central and South America, Asia-Pacific, West Asia and other regions in the world, Taiwan has since established agricultural cooperation relations with different countries. Throughout the years, thanks to multilateral collaboration efforts made by, for example, our overseas technical missions and the international organization Asian Vegetable Research and Development Center, we have been sharing our agricultural development experience and results with places around the globe. The sharing of our agricultural experience and techniques has greatly helped facilitate friendship and economic and trade cooperation.
