A group photo of the honored guests and project team at the “Wood Works” presentation and exhibition NCYU and Chiayi Forest District Office Jointly Create “Wood Works”: Digital Teaching Materials on Practices in Forest Products
National Chiayi University and the Chiayi Forest District Office, Forestry Bureau have joined hands to create digital teaching materials for forest products in practice. The objective is to enhance the education in practices of forest products and professional capabilities related to forest products, as well as to promote the development and utilization of domestic timber. They have also worked together to build an e-learning platform with digital teaching materials to cultivate talents, and promote research and development of wood products, combined with intelligent design and production. On the morning of May 13th, “Wood Works” presentation and exhibition kicked off at the exhibition hall on the first floor of the Library on the Lantan campus of NCYU. There is an AR experience of furniture model making and a wide-ranging display of cultural and creative works made of cedar wood (e.g., board games, entryway cabinets, shoe cabinets, chairs, desks and bedside tables). From now until May 20th, all who are interested in practices of forest products are invited to come join the event.

The digital teaching materials for forest products education in practice is a cross-disciplinary, collaborative effort among the NCYU Department of Wood Based Materials and Design, Department of Forestry and Natural Resources, the Department of Computer Sciences and Information Engineering, and Department of E-learning Design and Management, among others. They utilized the 30-hectare plantation of 60-year-old cedar trees in Fenqihu provided by the Chiayi Forest District Office. The whole processes in practice were filmed: from forest land survey, per-tree survey, volume calculation, logging, timber scaling, timber transportation, industrial lumber production and drying, to wood product design and manufacturing. The AR, or augmented reality, and VR, or virtual reality, technologies were also used to develop a complete set of digital teaching materials for forest products education. The materials will serve as a new option for self-learning for forestry students, and e-learning materials for civil servants and people interested in the field.

NCYU President Han Chien Lin expressed his gratitude to the Chiayi Forest District Office for providing the pilot forest land of the Compartment No. 141 in the Alishan Working Circle to the NCYU team for use. The land allowed the NCYU team to carry out planning and system construction for plantation management, as well as forest harvesting and primary industrial processing in the 3-hectare cedar plantation. The team also incorporated the concept of smart life design into mass production of wood products, bringing out courses with a focus on production and quantitative practices. Moreover, the processes filmed on site was later edited into teaching videos. The digital teaching materials were designed and developed with the help of AR and VR to enrich the teaching videos.

According to Chang Tai, Director of the Chiayi Forest District Office, the Forestry Bureau has been actively promoting the use of domestic timber and development of systematic digital teaching materials providing scientific information since 2017. Through practice-oriented learning, they hoped to foster students’s ability to “learn to learn,” which involves active learning, practical exercises and problem-solving skills. In addition to enhancing the digital education on forest products technology, the Forestry Bureau is dedicated to urging the use of domestic timber and wood materials made from well-managed forests. The practices of the Chiayi Forest District Office can be used as theoretical and practical learning materials for the students. While meeting the goals of economic feasibility and environmental protection, as advocated in management and utilization of domestic forests, they also hoped to substantially improve self-sufficiency and utilization of timber.

The NCYU team have developed teaching videos and virtual reality teaching materials on production of domestic forests. These are expected to help nurture talents with capabilities in forestry-related practices and professional technology, thus facilitating diversified learning that links technological development to production practices. Through the compilation of teaching materials, they hoped to promote the merits of forest management and importance of environmental resources. The ultimate goal is to ensure sustainable development of the forestry industry and the forests, and flourishing of the domestic forest industry in Taiwan.

NCYU President Han Chien Lin introduced the process of developing digital teaching materials for practices in forest products. VR video experience of forest products practices Chiayi Forest District Office Director Chang Tai signed the cedar wood piece and put it into the wooden box symbolizing Fenqihu, as a token of hope that every tree will be planted back in Fenqihu in the future.
