Advised by Prof. Lu Tian-Qi from the Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering, National Chiayi University, the project team “Best Choice,” consisting of students Ye Ze-Rui and Huang Ji-Jia, placed first in the International ICT Innovative Services Awards 2020. In its 25th edition, the contest was organized by the Industrial Development Bureau, Ministry of Economic Affairs. The team won the prize in the category of AR/VR Innovation Application for “Developing Popular Science-oriented Application Software using MR Technology.” They also placed third in the 2020 Intelligent Innovation and Interdisciplinary Creation Contest, held by National Central University, in the category of somatosensory interactive technology.

In September, a total of 93 teams around Taiwan joined the preliminary selection for the 2020 Intelligent Innovation and Interdisciplinary Creation Contest in the category of somatosensory interactive technology. Among them, 20 teams were finalist in the competition after professional review. On Oct. 25th, the teacher-student team of the Game & Animation Technology Lab from the NCYU Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering made it to the final rounds at National Central University. The team, who fully demonstrated the results of their research and practice, which were well-received and acknowledged by the judges, placed third in the final rounds.

In October, the team continued efforts to join the the category of AR/VR Innovation Application in the International ICT Innovative Services Awards 2020, in its 25th edition, and were singled out in the preliminary selection. On Nov. 7th, they joined the final rounds at the Sports Center, National Taiwan University. the teacher-student team was proactive to correct the shortcomings previously pointed out by the judges at the contest. Acknowledged by the judging panel, they were awarded the first prize in the category at the national contest.

According to Ye Ze-Rui and Huang Ji-Jia, both students of NCYU, most of the application software on the market is related to augmented reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR). While the VR is subject to venue restrictions and may cause dizziness, the AR is known to fail to carry out in-depth detection of the real-world environment, making it difficult for the related applications to be fully integrated into daily life. The project team has been striving to solve the above problems with the new MR technology, which proves to be useful in avoiding dizziness and venue restrictions associated with VR. By combining reality and virtuality with 3D depth and environmental detection, they have been exploring the interactivity of MR in practical applications. Or, to put it more simply, they seek to achieve the interactive experience fusing reality and virtuality. They expressed gratitude to the Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering, NCYU, for offering the supportive interactive multimedia courses and experimental venues and equipment. The valuable resources allowed the teacher-student team to create the MR technology work and demonstrate learning effectiveness, which help enhance their future competitiveness.
