Towards Energy Saving and Net Zero: NCYU Wins Silver Award in the Ministry of Economic Affairs' Energy Saving Leadership Award 2022
The Ceremony of the Ministry of Economic Affairs' Energy Saving Leadership Award and Energy Education Promotion Award in 2022 took place at NTUH International Convention Center on Dec. 7th. The Energy Saving Leadership Award went to 32 units across the country, including 20 public and private institutions and schools, and 12 elementary and junior high schools. For the first time, NCYU obtained the Silver Award at the Energy Saving Leadership Award in the category of education by the Ministry of Economic Affairs. The NCYU Energy-Saving Initiative Committee, led by Vice President Ruey-Shyang Chen, chairman of the team, joined the ceremony and received the award.

The Committee is an energy audit task force formed to establish NCYU's policies for energy saving and carbon reduction. According to the plan of "Project for Saving Electricity, Petroleum, Water and Paper at Government Agencies and Educational Institutions," NCYU's policies and goals for energy saving and resource management have been formulated to save electricity and petroleum by 1%, and water by 2% each year. Over the years, the Office of General Affairs and Center for Environmental Protection, Safety and Health have continued to implement the "Energy Conservation Action Plan for Government Agencies and Schools" (2016-2019) and the "Electricity Efficiency Management Plan for Government Agencies and Schools" (2020-2023) approved by the Executive Yuan. Standards of the energy-saving plan have been met so far, with the EUI of 65.06 in 2015 as the base year. Under the leadership of NCYU President Han Chien Lin, an inventory and statistic survey have been conducted on the university's capacity in line with the international commitments towards net zero and carbon reduction. In September this year, they pledged to achieve the goal of increasing the use of renewable energy to more than 50% by 2040 and net-zero emissions by 2045. The goal is to develop a Global Green University campus.

According to NCYU President Han Chien Lin, this was the second time the university has participated in the competition for the Energy Saving Leadership Award. The award was given for energy-saving achievements in six major aspects: installing energy-saving air-conditioning, lighting and power systems and smart streetlights; using an energy management system based on ISO 50001 standard; and setting up solar photovoltaic systems. In 2021, a total energy saving of around 143 kiloliters of oil equivalent had been achieved, generating energy saving benefits of NT$4.26 million, with 1.495 million kWh saved. The emission of carbon dioxide had been reduced by 761 metric tons, equivalent to two Daan Parks in annual carbon adsorption capacity. He expressed gratitude to all the colleagues for their coordinated efforts to achieve net zero and carbon reduction, and make NCYU sustainable.

Led by NCYU President Han Chien Lin, the Energy-Saving Initiative Committee pledged to achieve net zero and carbon reduction, making the university sustainable. NCYU Vice President Ruey-Shyang Chen (second from right) led Show-Jen Chiou (second from left), Director of Center for Environmental Protection, Safety and Health, and other colleagues to attend the Energy Saving Leadership Award and Energy Education Promotion Award Ceremony.
