Amorntip Prayoonwong, a doctoral graduate of the Department of Computer Sciences and Information Engineering, NCYU NCYU Teacher-Student Team Studies Search Performance: Securing Its Place on the World Stage in the Age of Big Data
  Prof. Chih-Yi Chiu from the Department of Computer Sciences and Information Engineering, National Chiayi University, has been advising Amorntip Prayoonwong, then a doctoral student at Suratthani Rajabhat University, one of NCYU’s sister schools in Thailand. For the past four years, they have been engaged in studies on computer vision and image recognition. They have been utilizing the latest neighbor search and deep learning technology in developing artificial intelligence retrieval models, which helps improve data search performance. Their study results, entitled “Learning to index for nearest neighbor search,” were accepted by the internationally renowned journal IEEE Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence, and published in in August, 2020, The journal, which achieved an impact factor as high as 17.861 in the 2019 Journal Citation Report and ranks first among the 136 international journals selected in the SCIE category of Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, is one of the world-leading academic journals in the field of computer vision and image recognition. Prayoonwong’s dissertation was honored with an Outstanding Dissertation Award by the Chinese Image Processing and Pattern Recognition Society in 2019, which was a testament to her scholarly achievements.

  Prayoonwong had been lecturing at a university in Thailand until an international exchange event held in NCYU inspired her to pursue further studies in Taiwan. She began her doctoral studies in computer sciences and information engineering at NCYU in 2015, and attained her doctor’s degree in June of 2019. Advised by Prof. Chiu, Prayoonwong has been conducting studies on the nearest neighbor search, which is one of the key basic technologies in such domains as computer vision, machine learning and information retrieval. Today, as the digital world has entered the era of big data with an ever-increasing amount and dimensions of data to be processed, its scale has increased by leaps and bounds with the popularization of internet multimedia technology. High-performing data search technology, which is one of the key technologies to exploit the opportunities of big data, has long been highly valued by both the industry and academia. The artificial intelligence retrieval model developed by Prayoonwong can be applied to deep learning, one of the trendiest technologies today. The model can be used to significantly improve the accuracy and speed of the search system. The study results are believed to contribute greatly to the related research areas.

  To process large amounts of data effectively with deep learning and speed up the performance of the search model, the research team led by Prof. Chiu adopted the then latest artificial intelligence GPU cloud system purchased by NCYU in 2018. With support from NCYU President Chyung Ay, the university has been investing more than NT$10 million over time to expand the artificial intelligence GPU cloud system. They hoped to capitalize on the high-speed computing features of GPU to perform large-scale data analysis and computation required for deep learning, with a view to meeting the university’s demand for various artificial intelligence applications in teaching and research. The system has currently been applied to several of NCYU’s research projects, some funded by the Ministry of Science and Technology, Ministry of Education, and Council of Agriculture, others conducted by the Intelligent Agriculture Research Center. It has gradually been employed in practical fields ranging from smart agriculture to smart manufacturing, which helps solve problems in production and sales.

The research paper, with the title of “Learning to index for nearest neighbor search,” was granted the honor of being published in IEEE, one of the world’s leading journals.
