NCYU worked with young farmer Su Yen-Jang, an alumnus of the Department of Horticultural Science, in launching “NCYU Coffee.” NCYU Carefree Campus Tour Available Now: Welcome to Savor Coffee and Tea on Campus
This morning (Nov. 14th), a press conference took place on the Lantan campus of National Chiayi University for the launch of NCYU Coffee, Tea and Carefree Campus Tour, as well as the Higher Education SPROUT Project Exhibition. The newly released NCYU Coffee and Tea were jointly developed by NCYU alumni and teachers from the Department of Food Science, who offered technical guidance. With pandemic restrictions easing, the Carefree Campus Tour is launched to invite communities to the campus of NCYU. The event opened with melodious ocarina performance by children of the Singchia Elementary School. NCYU President Han Chien Lin unveiled the new book Garbo's Great Adventure in the Field: Vegetables and Fruits with honored guests from the Chiayi City Government including Deputy Mayor Chen Shu-hui, Lin Li-Sheng, Director-General of the Department of Education, Chang Wan-Fen, Director-General of the Tourism and Information Department, as well as Lee Kuo-Jung, Principal of Fu Jen Catholic High School and Zhu Li-Gua, Principal of Singchia Elementary School, among others. The new book is a result of the Higher Education SPROUT Project.

During the late Japanese rule in Taiwan, a survey team from National Chiayi Institute of Agriculture (now NCYU) had studied and promoted the planting of ShiCha in Alishan. Since then, NCYU has been continuing its efforts to serve and contribute to the local community by cultivating talents, thus making this land a better place. NCYU Coffee is a culmination of hard work on the parts of NCYU faculty and alumni in pursuing development and co-prosperity. It features the Geisha and SL34 varieties cultivated by young farmer Su Yen-Jang, champion of the nationwide Truemeiyuan Taiwan Specialty Coffee Award 2022 announced just this August. Su is an alumnus of the NCYU Department of Horticultural Science. NCYU Coffee boasts a perfect roast curve developed by teachers of the Department of Food Science. To satisfy different palates, NCYU Coffee also features, for example, Arabica beans grown in Guoxing Township, Nantou County, and Yirgacheffe and Sidamo, both famous varieties from Ethiopia, Africa.

The university has also partnered with Yi Feng Cheng Taiwan Tea, which has been managing tea plantations for over 30 years, in bringing out NCYU Tea. The company has been crossing paths with NCYU since 2019, with three members of the family studying at the university in 2022. Yi Feng Cheng has been planting tea leaves with plant protection materials and organic fertilizers, managing the tea garden in an eco-friendly way. Each batch of tea leaves is TAP (Traceable Agriculture Product) and TGAP (Taiwan Good Agricultural Practices) certified. Under the technical guidance of teachers from the Department of Food Science, they developed Aroma Alishan Tea characterized by unique tea bag holes and tea leaf rolling. The product makes tea brewing as easy as making coffee.

Filling the venue with aroma of tea and coffee, the products bear witness to the dedication of NCYU alumni and faculty, who amaze us with their research and development skills. In addition to developing high-quality and reliable products, NCYU noticed the fact that quality of life has become a priority for people nowadays. How long has it been since your family goes on a hassle-free trip as the pandemic restrictions had been in place for two years? NCYU campuses were voted online by people in Southern Taiwan to be among the most picturesque in the country. What a pity for visitors to leave the beautiful campus empty-handed! The Worker Cooperative offers Carefree Campus Tour that allows participants to learn more about the NCYU campus and gain knowledge through professional guides. The tour includes visiting the KANO Park, playing nine-square baseball games, plant crafting at the Horticultural Technology Center, fruit seed crafting at the NCYU Botanic Garden, feeding small animals at the Animal Experiment Farm, making eco-friendly wooden coasters at the woodshop, and exploring the NCYU Insect Museum. Participants may enjoy a carefree, edutaining trip in the electric car, thus relieving stress at work and creating wonderful family memories.

To fulfill its social responsibility as a university, NCYU has been dedicated to helping schools in Chiayi to promote food and agriculture, and popular science education over the years. The ultimate goal is to raise awareness in the future generations to cherish the land and food, and protect the natural environment. On the eve of the anniversary, NCYU is proud to unveil high-quality NCYU Coffee and Tea, a result of collaboration with alumni. Characterized by a distinct cultural and natural vibe, the products are also an attempt to support the local industry. While sharing prosperity with the alumni, they wish to warm your heart with the scent of tea and coffee.
