Guides to Freshman and Sophomore English Courses:

NCYU strives to promote vigorous studies to enhance the English proficiency of our undergraduates. The University demands that freshmen and sophomores take “English Communication Training Part 1, 2, and 3” as three general education courses to earn a total of 6 credits. This series of three general education courses starts from the first semester of freshman year and continues for three semesters; kindly note the Part 3 course could be offered in either the first or second semester of the sophomore year. To guarantee effective teaching and learning, all freshmen are required to take a placement test simulating GEPT Intermediate level (first test) on campus during orientation and will afterward attend our progressive English courses in accordance with their test performance.

Undergraduates who attain CEF B2 level or equivalent scores of other English proficiency tests may apply for an “English Communication Training Part 1, 2, and 3” course waiver from the NCYU Language Center with a valid score report.

Guidelines to Freshman English Course

    Classification:
Based on their placement test performance, students are distributed to courses classified into three levels: A, B, and C. The instructor will employ teaching material corresponding to the students’ ability. Students at level C are also required to attend supplementary courses in the Language Center, including the self education courses and night classes that account for 10% of their academic grade.

Note that according to current policy freshmen matriculated in and after school year of 2007 must attain the NCYU English Proficiency Graduation Requirement (CEF B1), instead of taking the GEPT test at their sophomore year as requested by a previous stipulation. The CEF B1 level is equivalent to a TOEIC score 550 and higher or GEPT intermediate second test. Also note the proficiency test score is not counted toward major credits required for graduation.
