Alternative Assessment

Students in each course are also required to take part in the alternative assessment, which is counted as 10% of the final grade. The alternative assessment program is a core element of language development, and is ideally suited to university level learners. The spectrum of benefits covers the whole of range of learning styles and it nurtures students to take the step from being a classroom led learner to someone who takes autonomy for their language acquisition and also uses language in the real world in a natural way.

Because of the range of choices, reading story, listening to speeches, studying for TOEIC, competitions, presentations, small group work, large group work and free talk, students have ownership of their language development and can choose the method which best suits their own learning style, whereby both extraverts and introverts are free to acquire language in a comfortable way, or even to choose a cocktail of options.

Also, due to the element of choice and the available options students are becoming autonomous learners in that they are taking ownership of their learning. When this is coupled with the range of options being natural real world English the success is palpable.

The alternative assessment program consists of two parts: language learning activities and contests and a midterm individual or group presentation. To fulfill the program, students need to take part in the workshops, speeches or contests provided by the Language Center; moreover, they need to join an in-class midterm presentation. After the in-class presentation, instructors are required to recommend at least 1 student or group to join the relevant competition held by the Language Center.

Activities and contests held by the Language Center may vary from semester to semester. Latest description of the alternative assessment will be released in the beginning of each semester.
