A. P. Certification via a Cloud System: A Result of Collaboration Among the Industry, Government and Academia
The teacher team, consisting of Pai-Tsang Chang and Jiang Yi-Lu from the Department of Horticultural Science, National Chiayi University, has been coaching on how to obtain the certification of the Global Good Agricultural Practice (GLOBALG. A. P.). They have been working with Yuan Ming-Jian and Wu Chin-Tung, both teachers from the Smart Agricultural Park Research Center, National Yunlin University of Science and Technology (NYUST), in incorporating the GLOBAL G.A.P. certification into the cloud management platform for supply chain traceability. With joint efforts from Associate Researchers Lin Ru-hong and Chen Chun-Liang and Assistant Researcher Yang Xiao-Ying from the Tea Research and Extension Station, Council of Agriculture, Executive Yuan, they have been dedicated to searching for suitable fields, where they offer guidance on cultivation management and tea production technology. In last December, with policy and funding support from the Agriculture and Food Agency, they helped Sunlinktea Tea Ltd. become the first tea factory in Taiwan that obtained the GLOBALG. A. P. certification with the cloud management system. On Dec. 3rd, “Paperless Coaching for Sunlinktea Tea GLOBAL G.A.P. Certification Presentation and Press Conference” took place at the Smart Agricultural Park Research Center, NYUST. In the upcoming future, they will jointly promote Taiwan’s high-quality premium tea and agricultural products to the world through collaboration among the industry, government and academia.

Established by the European Union, the GLOBALG.A.P. focuses on food safety, employee welfare and environmental sustainability. The traceability system enables distributors to confirm the product sources and ensure the integrity of the production and sales supply chain. To promote Taiwan’s premium tea to the world, the NCYU Department of Horticultural Science, NYUST Smart Agricultural Park Research Center, and Tea Research and Extension Station have been engaged in cross-domain cooperation. They have been coaching students with agricultural knowledge on the procedures for GLOBAL G.A.P. certification, and how to manage farm operations with the cross-domain use of the cloud system, and produce certification documents in a highly efficient digital manner by integrating multiple verification documents. They have also been assisting the students to start their own business by providing innovative agricultural services. Founded in last May, “Lenong Agricultural Services Ltd.” offers tea certification services, and have provided guidance on how to achieve the GLOBAL G.A.P. certification for a wide spectrum of agricultural products, ranging from guavas, red dragon fruit, pineapples, pineapple custard apples, bananas to lettuce. They will continue to expand their services in the days to come. They have also offered guidance to young people through cross-domain integration with support from the local Hua Xi Bakery, who develops tea-related bakery products that are internationally certified. Innovation and entrepreneurship in agriculture not only help introduce new technologies and business models into the industry, but also encourage Taiwanese professionals to commit to agriculture. The ultimate goal is to create a new momentum in Taiwan’s agricultural activities.

According to Pai-Tsang Chang, a teacher from the Department of Horticultural Science, NCYU, the agricultural products in Taiwan are known for their high quality. It is critical to promote Taiwan’s high-quality agricultural products to the world and gain international recognition. In the face of market globalization and trade liberalization, it is pivotal to harmonize agricultural production standards and agricultural product specifications with international standards. Obtaining the GLOBALG.A.P. certification is key to the global circulation of agricultural products. At present, more than 0.21 million certified service providers from 135 countries in the world have been marketing their products worldwide. Therefore, linking with international certification and harmonizing with agricultural production standards pave the way to future opportunities for Taiwan’s agricultural products.
