The National University Cup Partially Fermented Tea-Making Competition 2020, organized by National Chung Hsing University (NCHU) this year, took place at the NCHU Agricultural Experiment Station from Dec. 4th to 5th. The competition was divided into bar-shaped and hemispherical categories, joined by 13 teams from four educational institutions, including National Taiwan University (NTU), NCHU, National Chiayi University (NCYU), and Tatung Institute of Technology. The NCYU students achieved noteworthy success. Guo Yu-Ming, a third-year student of the Professional Bachelor Program of Farm Management, placed first in the bar-shaped category. The third place in the bar-shaped category went to the team consisting of Chen Zhi-Hong, a PhD student of the Department of Agronomy, and Lin Guan-Ting and Chen Zong-Sheng, both fourth-year students of the Professional Bachelor Program of Farm Management. In addition, Cai Zhe-Ting, a student of the Professional Bachelor Program of Farm Management who had won an outstanding award in a tea roasting contest held by Nantou County won the runner-up prize in the hemispherical category.

The judging panel this year was formed by tea professionals including Dr. Chen Kuo-Renn, Former Director of the Tea Research and Extension Station, Chen Iou-Zen, Professor of the NTU Department of Horticulture and Landscape Architecture, and Lan Fang-Ren, Former Director-General of the Mingjian Township Farmers’ Association of Nantou County. The bar-shaped category this year was joined by nine teams; and the hemispherical category, which requires higher technical skills, was participated by four teams. To prepare for the contest, all the teams have spared no effort and stayed up late for a night and two days. The NCYU student teams showed remarkable achievements at the competition this year.

Guo Yu-Ming, a NCYU student who placed first in the bar-shaped category, mentioned he was grateful to the teachers for their advice and support, which allowed him to put into practice the knowledge on tea crop science and tea-making techniques learned during the class. At the contest, he paid special attention to temperature control during the roasting process to avoid excessively high temperature, so that beautiful colors would appear on the tea leaves. He learned from experience that it takes time for the tea leaves to ferment sufficiently, which is requisite to bring out the aroma. All these made him stand out as the champion. Winner of the second place in the hemispherical category, Cai Zhe-Ting indicated that he has been familiar with tea-making techniques since childhood. As a NCYU student, he has joined tea-making related courses offered by Prof. Huang Wen-Lii from the Department of Agronomy, which enabled him to learn more about and refine his tea-making skills. Participation in competitions gives him opportunities to learn from others. It not only allows him to challenge and improve himself, but introduces him to many like-minded friends. With the new friends, they can learn from each other through discussions on the various problems arising in tea making, such as how to identify tea cyanine and adjust the method along the way. All these require continuous learning and practice. He hoped he would be able to sell Taiwan’s quality tea to the world one day in the future.

According to Hou Jin-Ri, Chairman of the Professional Bachelor Program of Farm Management, both Guo Yu-Ming and Cai Zhe-Ting come from families of tea makers. Studying at NCYU further familiarizes them to tea production and processing, as well as knowledge and skills related to farm management and marketing. These will help prepare them to assist in managing the tea garden, tea production and sales at home after graduation. There are currently 16 students at the NCYU Professional Bachelor Program of Farm Management who come from families of tea makers. The award winners could serve as models for all the students to learn from.
