A groundbreaking ceremony for the “New Construction of Student Dormitory on Sinmin Campus,” worth NT$400 million, was held at NCYU on the morning of June 23rd. NCYU Invests More than NT$400 Million to Build a New Student Dormitory on Sinmin Campus
National Chiayi University continues to look for resources to construct and renovate student dormitories on each campus, hoping to provide students with comfortable, warm and high-quality accommodation. On the morning of June 23rd, a groundbreaking ceremony for the “New Construction of Student Dormitory on Sinmin Campus” was held at NCYU. Hosted by President Chyung Ay, the groundbreaking ceremony was attended by top supervisors of NCYU, Alex Arch Chairman Guo Shu-Sheng, Xiang Hong Construction Co. Ltd. Chairman Xu Yi-Ping and other representatives. Together, they prayed for smooth and safe construction of the new project.

The new dormitory on the Sinmin Campus is located next to Lane 208, Section 4, Shixian Road, Chiayi City. The total construction duration is 850 calendar days and is expected to be completed in November of 2023. The procurement is worth NT$406.38 million, and the funds are raised by the university itself. The newly built dormitory is a reinforced concrete building consisting of 8 floors above ground and one underground floor. The underground floor will be for parking and computer facilities. The services on the first two floors above ground will be outsourced to create a more convenient living experience for the students. All rooms on the 3rd to 8th floors are suites, including 180 double-bed suites and 18 single-bed suites, with can accommodate 378 students. The buildings are arranged in a north-south direction. Green building materials are key to the construction and color design of the dormitory, which echoes a simple, unsophisticated and traditional architectural style. Green trees and grass will be grown in the outdoors area, where the permeable pavement will be surrounded by lush green trees. By building a brand new dormitory, they hope to integrate the campus with the surrounding community, thus helping drive regional development.

NCYU President Chyung Ay indicated that the construction base was once an idle and low-utilized land that had once been requested to be taken back by the National Property Administration, Ministry of Finance. The land was reserved by the university thanks to endeavors of the staff. The proposal for the construction project was approved by the Ministry of Education in May of 2017. In recent years, due to inflation and rising labor costs, fewer and fewer companies are interested in bidding for large-scale construction contracts. The plan had been revised for two years, during which the tender had failed four times to attract bidders. To provide students with a high-quality and brand-new accommodation experience, school funds for the project had been increased by NT$90 million. The bid was successfully made in May this year.. The dormitory is expected to become a caring, warm, safe, and harmonious space characterized by humane management to undergraduate students of NCYU. In addition to meeting the accommodation needs of general students, the university also pays attention to the needs of the disadvantaged students. High-quality dormitories may serve as one of the incentives to attract undergraduate freshman, especially those from other counties and cities. It may also help boost recruitment of international students..
