WINE Australia has appointed James Gosper as its operations director for the US and Canada.

Mr Gosper, a former US senior brand manager and chief winemaker and winery manager with Yarra Valley operation Domaine Chandon, also spent a decade with top-end brand Moet Hennessy.

He will be based in New York and will develop, deliver and manage local market business plans in an attempt to strengthen Wine Australia's market position.

Mr Gosper said he had observed a "vast under-representation of Australian wine" while working in the US and Canada in the past two years.

"This is an interesting and compelling offer . . . an outstanding opportunity to work with wineries in Australia, and North American trade and media, to reposition Australia," Mr Gosper said.

The appointment is the first of two senior roles for Wine Australia in North America and the UK/Ireland/Europe market.
