Development and Features
The masters program of the department was established in 2004. It aims to cultivate researchers in English Teaching and Applied Linguistics. The curriculum emphasizes interdisciplinary cooperation, the depth and breadth of academic and professional training and advanced English (foreign) language abilities.
Goals
In addition to curricula, materials and teaching methodologies in Teaching English as a Foreign Language, the English Teaching group emphasizes especially the exploration of socio-cultural and cognitive aspects of language. In addition to basic linguistic courses, the Applied Linguistics group contains four tracks, i.e. sociolinguistics, language and cognition, communication, and computational linguistics. Students of our institute are encouraged to be (a) researchers in TEFL or applied linguistics, (b) teachers in elementary school, high school or college, or (c) advanced translators, interpreters, or editors for business or the government.
Requirements
English Teaching Group
  1. Students in the English Teaching group need to take at least 36 credit hours to graduate. The 36 credit hours include 9 hours in required courses, 21 hours in electives, but do not include the required 6 hours of the MA Thesis.
  2. English proficiency: Students must take an English proficiency test and receive 560 on the traditional TOEFL (220 CBT) or pass the first part of the GEPT advanced level before they graduate. Those who do not obtain the required score must take and pass Advanced English Listening and Reading (which does not count toward the credit hours required to graduate) before they graduate.
Applied Linguistics Group
