The Department of Biomechatronic Engineering currently has 13 full-time teachers. The student–teacher ratio is 19:1 (compared with a university-wide19.15:1) in the daytime undergraduate department and 3:1 in the graduate institution (compared with a university-wide 5:1). Both ratios satisfy the standards set by the Ministry of Education. To ensure student-centered learning, the department established a set of mechanisms to guide faculty hiring, course planning, learning environment creation, and learning performance evaluation. The department's strict review mechanism guarantees that only highly qualified faculty members whose ideals align with the educational objectives of the department and graduate institute are hired.

The faculty members of this department specialize in the research and development of the following areas: power mechanical engineering, sensing systems, and control engineering, and biomaterials and biomedical engineering. Specific laboratories have been established to facilitate the learning and future career training of students. The teaching and research directions of these laboratories are as follows:

【Power Mechanical Engineering】

1. Thermal Engineering Lab (Prof. Jeng-Liang Lin):Applying thermal systems engineering to electromechanics, and using window programs for monitoring and controlling thermal systems.

2. Engineering Material Properties Lab (Prof. Cheng-Chang Lien and Prof. Yung-Chuan Chiou):Measuring and analyzing engineering and biomedical materials.

3. Mechatronics Lab (Assoc. Prof. Jain-Song Ju):Teaching students the concepts of mechatronics controlling systems and to analyze and design these systems, with the objective of developing student operational abilities and experiences.

4. Product Development Engineering Lab (Asst. Prof. Wen-Luh Huang):Developing new products and mechanical equipment by integrating related technology in biology, food, machinery, electronics, electrical engineering, energy, information, sensing and detection, control systems, signal technology, and microelectromechanical systems.

5. Pneumatic Logic Control Lab (Prof. Cheng-Chang Lien):This lab focuses on pneumatic pressure control technology in electromechanical systems, teaching pneumatic circuit, sensing element application, and pneumatic logic control skills that are integrated with electronic controllers.

6. Hoisting Machine Lab (Assoc. Prof. Jain-Song Ju):This lab trains professional personnel who have agricultural production skills by guiding students to participate in farm management and agricultural machinery operations. By training a new agricultural labor force, this lab is aimed at facilitating sustainable agricultural production.

7. Internal Combustion Engine Lab (Asst. Prof. Wen-Luh Huang):According to machinery manufacturing process, timber with low or no use value can be manufactured into fuel. This lab investigates the dynamic characteristics and exhaust gas composition of this emerging fuel source when it is used in internal combustion engines and other consumer and industrial manufacturing processes. The new fuel is expected to replace fossil fuels, thereby reducing greenhouse gas emissions and crop pollution caused by machinery operation, extending the life of farm machinery, reducing machinery depreciation, lowering machinery investment costs, and increasing farmer income.

【Sensing Systems and Control Engineering】

1. Quality Measurement of Biological Production Lab (Prof. Huaang-Youh Hurng and Prof. Cheng-Chang Lien):Measuring, analyzing, and controlling bioproducts and biochemical materials.

2. Precision Measurement Lab (Assoc. Prof. S. Hung):This lab applies precision measurement technology in bioindustry and dynamic mechanical components, supplemented by engineering knowledge and by statistical and reliability analysis. This lab also explores the feasibility of application in the industry.

3. Computer Visual Image Lab (Asst. Prof. Ying-Jen Huang and Asst. Prof. Te-Hui Wu):Applying image-processing technology and artificial intelligence theory to analyze, identify, and examine industrial and biological products, as well as to conduct spatial orientation studies.

4. Electronic Logic Circuit Lab (Assoc. Prof. Chao-Wang Young and Assoc. Prof. D. C. Tseng):This lab focuses on designing electronic logic circuits for use in solving engineering problems.

【Biomaterials and Biomedical Engineering】

1. Biomechatronics and Cell Engineering Lab (Prof. Chyung Ay, Prof. Min-Sheng Hung, and Assoc. Prof. Chao-Wang Young):This lab applies biomechanical technology to bioindustry and biomedical engineering. Micromechanical technology is also developed and applied in biomolecular and cell engineering, serving functions such as sampling, sample transmission, reaction, separation, and detection. These functions are applied in the development of microchips for achieving integrated system control.

2. Biomedical and Microthermal Fluidics Technology Lab (Prof. Min-Sheng Hung):This lab uses microprocessing technology to develop cell and DNA control platforms. Research specialties include stretching and fixing DNA molecules on substrates through electrostatic interaction, and analyzing and controlling DNA by using optical technology (laser heating, dielectrophoresis, and electroosmotic flow). In addition, through enzyme interaction, this lab develops bionanotechnology that can dissect and repair biomolecules. Recent research topics include the following: technology for physical analyzing chromosomes, electrostatic film actuators, stretching and fixing chromosomal DNA, partial DNA thermal denaturation, cell DNA extraction chips, the property analysis of cellmechanics, Phalaenopsis protoplasts extraction technology, Phalaenopsis seedling-distinguishing technology, cell sorting microfluidics technology, and developing a microfluidics platform for real-time DNA replication and detection.

3. Cell Mechanics Lab (Prof. Chyung Ay):This lab researches artificial organs used for tissue engineering in regenerative medicine and substitute biomedical materials. Several systems have been developed for performing in vitro cell cultivation and stimulating automated cell growth by using mechanical force, such as automation systems that stimulate cell growth by using fluid shear stress, Z-axis sliding mechanical force, and X- and Y-axis tensile mechanical force. In addition, physical methods are applied to examine cell properties.

4. Brain–Machine Interface Lab (Prof. Chyung Ay and Assoc. Prof. Chao-Wang Young):This lab uses electroencephalogram signal processing and analysis technology to control electromechanical equipment and systems, thereby aiding research regarding human behavior.
